Bringing your new kitten or adult cat home.

The most important step in welcoming a new kitten or adult cat is minimizing stress. We strongly recommend quarantining your new companion in a small, quiet area of your home where other animals do not have access during the two‑week quarantine period. If your kitten or adult appears timid or frightened, please allow them to adjust at their own pace and avoid forcing interaction.
Creating a Safe, Comfortable Space

Make sure your new addition has:
  • A clean litter box
  • Fresh food and water
  • A few special treats
  • Toys for comfort and enrichment
A new home comes with unfamiliar smells, sounds, and people, which can feel overwhelming until they become accustomed to their environment. If you have young children, please ensure they do not chase, overwhelm, or force the kitten or adult cat to be held while they are still adjusting.
Understanding the Adjustment PeriodMost Devon Rex are naturally outgoing and people‑oriented; however, even the most confident kitten may feel unsure in a brand‑new home. Patience and gentle handling will help them settle in smoothly.
Our FAQs below can help answer many of the common questions you may have as you prepare for this transition.
How do I quarantine my new kitten or cat?
When you bring home a new kitten or adult cat, they should be quarantined for two weeks in a small, quiet area of your home, completely separate from other pets. After the two‑week period, you can begin slowly introducing your new companion to the rest of the home and gradually to other animals.
What do I feed my new kitten?
Your kitten should continue eating Farmina Kitten dry and canned food for the full two‑week quarantine period. After the two weeks, you may begin slowly transitioning to a new food if you choose. (Amazon link for the current food is provided below.)
How much do I feed my new kitten?
Kittens should have free‑choice access to kibble throughout the day and receive canned food three times daily, approximately 3 oz per serving.
How do I transition my kitten to a new food?
To transition your kitten to a new food, begin by feeding 75% of their current food and 25% of the new food for the first four days. Every few days, increase the new food by 25% while decreasing the old food by the same amount. Monitor your cat’s appetite and overall health throughout the transition. By day 10, your kitten should be fully switched to the new food.
How do I clean my kitten's ears?
You can gently clean the ears using a Q‑tip moistened with warm water or an ear‑cleaning solution.
How do I trim my kitten or cat's claws?
Hold your kitten securely and gently press down on the paw to expose the claws. Locate the point where the nail separates from the quick (the pink, sensitive area). Position the trimmers halfway between the quick and the tip of the claw, then squeeze the trimmers to clip the nail safely. (Amazon link for recommended clippers is provided below.)
What do i feed my new cat
Farmina Adult. Adult cats can be free‑fed kibble throughout the day and offered one to two 5‑ounce servings of wet food in the evening.
How do I introduce my new kitten or cat to my other animals?
For the first week, you can begin scent swapping by exchanging blankets and beds between your pets to help them become familiar with each other’s smells. You can also feed them on opposite sides of a closed door so they associate each other’s scent with something positive.
After a few days of calm behavior with the door closed, you can crack the door slightly to allow them to see one another without physical access. Once they are able to eat comfortably and show relaxed behavior around each other’s scents and presence, you can begin supervised introductions between your new kitten or cat and your other pets.
How do I bathe my new kitten or cat?
Devon Rex kittens and cats do not require frequent bathing. We recommend a bath once or twice a year, only if needed. You may use Head & Shoulders Original shampoo and a sink filled with warm water. Do not fill the sink while your cat is inside. Instead, prepare the warm water first, then gently lower them in.
Lather your cat by hand, avoiding the area above the neck. Rinse thoroughly and dry them well with a clean, soft towel. Their face can be cleaned with a warm washcloth only—no soap is necessary.
Avoid using brushes on a Devon Rex, as brushing can damage their delicate coat.
